Covid-19 has been Ubiquitous  and Unrelenting.  Governments across the world have been faced with an Unprecedented situation in Uncharted waters.

I believe they were trying to do their best, but there is no doubt mistakes were made amid their daily UtterancesThe UK has been criticized for:

  • Being too late to bring in the first Lockdown, compared with other European countries and dithered bringing in the second nationwide full Lockdown - trying to safeguard Christmas family get togethers.

  • Releasing elderly patients from hospital into care homes  without adequate Covid testing -  in Scotland a third of Covid deaths have been  in care homes.

  • Being too late bringing in checks and restrictions on overseas travel.  I read a report on next to no such measures at Heathrow Airport (Britain's businest)  well into the first Lockdown.

  • Unauthorized travel and non-compliance with regulations by government ministers and advisors, who should have known better - and who were not all quick to resign.

On the other hand there have been many reports on Unstinting, Unremitting, Unrelenting and Uplifing work and gestures from so many people - nurses, doctors, care workers, charity workers,  scientists working on the vaccines, the army for building at record speed the emergency Nightingale hospitals in conference centres etc |(fortunately many not needed)  - ordinary people doing extraordinary things to raise money for charity and to raise spirits in their  community.

  1. Once again, your experiences this last year are similar to mine. In hindsight, there were many missteps with COVID polices, but just as many or more examples of extraordinary positive behavior.

  2. To this list you could add U.S. -- which was also late off the mark on addressing Covid at the start. And yes, Uplifting -- the tremendous role of medical personnel and care givers in these challenging times. https://mollyscanopy.com/2021/04/undaunted-seventh-blogiversary-atozchallenge/

  3. Snap! I used ubiquitous too :) But you thought of way more U words than I did. I should ululate your praises to the heavens ;)

    1. Thanks, Alex, for another U word, though I had to look up the dictionary to see what ululate meant!

  4. Utterances need accompanying action to be effective. A big plus here was introducing a National cabinet with both Federal and state govts. The States have a decent level of autonomy and broadly speaking, when a crisis hits the country is used to thinking what’s best for all (some politicians less so).
And yes, the inspirational adaptation of many people and organisations was uplifting. I should have heard Alex’s ululations from where I live...lol.

  5. Yes, the UK Westminster government is still not comfortable with its relatively recent devolved governments in Scotland, Wales and. Northern Ireland doing there own thing on lockdown regulations and timetable for relaxation. It did make for some confusion at times.
