Sepia Saturday - Beach Memories

Sepia Saturday gives bloggers an opportunity to share their family history through photographs.

It is a most miserable day here in Scotland with continuous  rain, high winds, and flood warnings  as Storm Desmond reaches its peak - the fourth already this winter.  So the thought of summer, sun  and sandy beaches is rather appealing and took me back to happy holiday memories - but no sign of  Robinson Crusoe!

Daughter (in the middle) enjoying a donkey ride on Blackpool beach.

A surprisingly empty Blackpool beach with the Central Pier
and the famous Tower in the background.

 Mum and I

looking over to the  Farne Islands.

Sandyhills Beach  near Rockcliffe, Kirkcudbrightshire (pronounced Kir-cu-bri-shire)
on the Solway Firth in south west Scotland.

Across to the east coast of Scotland and Canty Bay, East Lhian  south of Edinburgh
with the Bass Rock in the background.

On the Isle of Iona looking across to the Isle of Mull off the west coast of Scotland - one of my most favourite places.

And finally a happy picture of my brother
looking very natty in his knitted bathing suit and sunhat.

  1. Lovely photos - there was nothing like a seaside beach to get our parents and grandparents to get out the camera. As I read this, Desmond is doing his thing down here - hope you are safe.

  2. Your brother has some very nice sand there. I never saw a knitted bathing suit before. I wonder if it got saggy in the water.

  4. Ah ha! I recognized that photo of the Isle of Mull from Iona! :) How neat to be able to say I've been there! Enjoyed all the pix of the various beaches with & without family.

  6. Lovely sunny photos. It would be interesting to compare the same scenes when the sun is not shining. My husband's aunt enailed from Hereford todsy and mentioned the bad weather and flooding there too - she will be looking forward to leaving next week for a month's holiday in Australia.

  7. Two of my favourite subjects, beaches and donkeys. Thank goodness we don't have knitted bathing suits these days.

  8. Desmond appears to have run out of puff at last. Blackpool beach would have not been a pleasant place to be the last two days. Bamburgh is one of my favourite beaches - I should have included it as well.

  9. When did storms get names in the UK ??!!
Whatever happened to partly sunny, chance of rain; and partly cloudy, chance of sunshine?

    1. Hi, Mike, storm names were only introduced this winter (November I think) to some criticism I must say. I can't even remember the names before Desmond blew in this weekend, to severe flooding in parts of the Scottish Borders where I live.

  10. I saw footage of the storm on the news this evening. My first thought was batten down the hatches. Of course about now in California I'm just very jealous of all that water.

  12. Sorry to be so late to this party, but I have enjoyed these beach photos. Your beaches are so different from the ones in Virginia and North Carolina. I would love to see them in person one day.
