A-Z Blogging Challenge 2021 - Scottish Borders in Lockdown
Way back in March 2020 it was INCONCEIVABLE that the Covid INFECTION would still be such a major feature in our lives. Here in Britain we are about to enter a period of relaxation, but news of the virus causing a third Lockdown in Europe is a threat to the prospect of normality. Surely it must spread across the channel to us!
Do you feel INUNDATED with INFORMATION OVERLOAD? We are constantly bombarded by the media with details on Covid and Lockdown, Yet I was concerned to read last week of a survey which highlighted the number of people who could not name the symptoms of the virus.
INSPIRATION - the media is full of stories of medical staff working tirelessly in difficult conditions to cope with the almost overwhelming cases of Covid; of children and others raising money for good causes. Particularly capturing the public imagination was Captain Tom Moore who at the age of 99 took a daily fund raising walk - in four months achieving over £33 million for NHS charities He sadly died of Covid shortly after his 100th birthday.
Joe Wicks who came to fame at the start of the first Lockdown with his TV spots of fun exercise for children with 89 million views, and £80,000 raised for charities.
INNOVATION - I am full of admiration for those businesses and organizations who are trying something different in these challenging times. One example is a local wholesale greengrocer who was faced with a loss of bushiness with hotels and restaurants all closed. So he has set up a home delivery service to residents - buy a £10, £15 or £20 box of fruit and vegetables (you can specify what you want and it will be topped up with what is available to make up the value.), delivered to your door at no extra charge. Pay on delivery. Superb quality compared with supermarket produce.
An enterprising couple in a nearby town, popular with walkers has set up a mobile take-away in a former horse box - specialising in coffees and milkshakes, but also providing other hot drinks, soft drinks, sausage rolls and cakes. Very welcome when cafes and restaurants are closed.
I agree there’s been much to admire about people’s responses to covid with their commitment and innovation. It’s easy to understand the anxiety that would come with being in close proximity to high risk areas. It does become stressful listening to all the news and worrying that some people don’t even recognise the symptoms despite all the publicity.
ReplyDeleteMy advice...keep indulging in that chocolate!!
Good post...the pandemic is underlying all our activities, or lack of them. We need to indulge in something safe and pleasing to our tastes. I was surprised yesterday that I haven't been eating chocolate lately, what with all the meds I'm on. Apparently they've knocked out that craving. Hope it comes back when I'm well again!
ReplyDeleteI read about Tom Moore and was also, captured by his charm. It's sad that he'd died of COVID, but he lived a long good life and went out on a high note.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see innovation emerging from the challenges we face. I too get a bit bogged down in the same same news stories which I find so depressing. I have to tune out sometimes. My indulgence is ice-cream which is not a good habit to get into at all!
ReplyDeleteYes, hats off to Captain Tom Moore and his fundraising effort. The spirit of community engendered by this pandemic has been one of its benefits as we try to get through it together. Excellent post.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your interest in my posts and your kind comments.
