A cavalcade of cars and vans parked on a busy street feature in this week's Sepia Saturday's prompt photograph. Cue - to sort through my family collection, but also thank my local history group Auld Earlston for many of the photographs featured here.
My
cousin's first ever car - a 1932 Morris Minors and the only car he
ever had where he made a profit when he sold it. He bought it in
1958 for £20 and sold it a year later for £30! The photograph is taken
near Inverary in the west of Scotland on the Rest and Be Thankful road,
- notorious for landslips, snow and road closed warnings!
My Dad, John Weston (on the left) with his brother
Charles. I was delighted to get this photograph from my cousin, as it
is one of the few photographs I have of my father prior to his marriage
in 1938 to my mother, and means a lot to me. John and Charles were close as
brothers and often went on motoring trips together. Here looking very suave in a smart casual style of the day. c.1936
A photograph from my cousin's collection on his Oldham Family
Prime Minister Asquith leaving Earlston Station in 1908 in the official car to take him to the political meeting in the village of Earlston in the Scottish Borders.
Out for a drive in Earlston c.1920's
Baker's Van in Earlston
From Baker to Butcher - with a rather rickety looking vehicle belonging to Donaldson family in Earlston - no relation!
Back to Family
A photograph of my elegant mother taken I suspect before my parents married in 1938.
Like Mother, LIke Daughter
Fast forward to 1968 (this photograph was dated) - I am surprised that my father allowed someone to sit on the car.
This was my husband's first car -
a silver grey Ford Escort, bought just a few weeks before we first met
in 1970. He was always proud of his cars and looked after them well.
This brings back memories of our engagement. It must have been love,
that he actually suggested I sat on top of the car for this photograph -
not something he has allowed since! But he did spread out the tartan rug for me. For once I am quite in fashion with my miniskirt, peter pan collar blouse, and
1970's striped coat!
My cousin's little son, learning to drive at an early age! My brother had a very similar pedal car in the 1950's - but no photographs of him in it.

Your car photos are great, and much more enjoyable than the reason for the line of cars in the prompt picture. And three cheers that the link worked from SS this week to your post!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos of multiple cars from various times! I smiled at both you and your mother caught by the camera sitting on the hoods of the cars. Nice of your future husband to provide the tartan rug to protect you - or was it to protect his car? :) And a close 'snap' with your parents marrying in 1938 and mine in 1939 (June).
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful selection of car photos...and so many from your family’s collection! I, too, like the mother-daughter car photos. Such fun to pose with a sporty car. And that you have photos of both your parents with vehicles before their marriage is just wonderful.
ReplyDeleteA fine medley. You are lucky to have photos of those early motor cars. My family timeline is neatly divided into chapters by cars, and the best family stories always involve a car or car trip. But I could never organize the photos as you have done.
ReplyDeleteWho can resist a child in a kid's car?
ReplyDeleteThe first cars certainly were rickety. I remember how the boys in The Magnificent Ambersons would yell, "Get a horse!" or (I'm paraphrasing) "Look at that sewing machine!" when they saw a car go by.
So fun to see the different cars over the years.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is your mom with that SHINY car! She looks equally elegant.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your enjoyable feedback on my post.
