Our daughter was 5 years old and Crufts Dog Championships Show was on television - how could we resist that combination. The result by the summer was that Beauty a golden cocker spaniel became part of the family.
Beauty |
It was a sad time when we lost Beauty at the age of nine, and we said we would not go through that again. But surreptiously we were all looking at adverts in the local papers, and within a month we had Colleen - a 2 year old gentle blue roan cocker. Somewhere amongst all that dark fur, there were two liquid eyes.
Colleen died suddenty at seven years old at a time when there were other stresses in the family. We could not imagine family life without a dog and that had to be another cocker spaniel. So within a few months we had puppy Casmir (Cass) - an orange roan cocker - she had such a distinctive colouring, she became well known around our small town and lived to the grand age of 13.
I always felt that if Cass starred in a Disney cartoon, she would be the Princess. Judge for yourself here!
Three much loved pets who are a part of our family memories.

Those dogs have such character in their faces Sue. They deserve to be remembered in this special parade.
ReplyDeleteTwenty-eight years with lovely cocker spaniels must have been filled with joy -- for you and the four-footed ones. Lucky you are.
ReplyDeleteSuch pretty dogs!
ReplyDeleteI always wanted a cocker spaniel when I was a kid but we never got any dog.
ReplyDeleteAw, such cute dogs!
ReplyDeleteLove the picture of your Princess. Looks like the photo is taken in stormy whether :)
ReplyDeleteThey are adorable! I love their great, big, black licorice noses!
ReplyDeleteOh I love this! My heart always belongs to the dogs! Oh and yes I have cats as well, but dogs rule!
ReplyDeleteMy family had a black and white cocker spaniel when I was a baby. It was older than me and died when I was three. I never heard of "roan" cockers before, and after I looked them up, I am still confused.
ReplyDeleteThey's so beautiful, and spaniels are such good-natured dogs :-) Jo
ReplyDeleteAs a child I whined constantly getting a dog, but we never had. I can see what I have missed here.
ReplyDeleteWhen our children were little we always had beagles in the country. When we moved to town we took our dog and it got run over by a car. That was the last pet we had. They are all grown up now and each have dogs. I love all the granddogs.

Thank you to everyone for such lovely comments on our much loved pets. To Postcardy asking what "roan" means - my understanding is it means having a coat with white hairs, so a blue roan cocker is black & white and an orange roan cocker is tan & white. Hope this helps!
ReplyDeleteLovely dogs; the eyes and ears always captivate you even if those long ears take some untangling at times.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos and memories - and I do understand how you feel - our family would not be complete without a dog either.
ReplyDeletewhat lovely family members they are/were. I'm more in the cat camp but these are just gorgeous. All our pets give us so much.
